In 1955 ontwikkelde de Amerikaanse wetenschapper Jonas Salk het eerste effectieve injecteerbare poliovaccin (IPV). Kort daarna, in 1961, introduceerde Albert Sabin het orale poliovaccin (OPV), dat door de eenvoudige toediening via druppels grootschalige wereldwijde vaccinatiecampagnes mogelijk maakte. Dankzij deze medische doorbraken zakte het aantal besmettingen wereldwijd met meer dan 99 procent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Om de strijd tegen de ziekte onder de aandacht te houden, stelde Rotary International <strong>World Polio Day<\/strong> in. Deze dag wordt jaarlijks op <strong>24 oktober<\/strong> gevierd ter ere van de geboortedag van Jonas Salk.
