We zijn in de cd-show bezig met een reis langs de zuid afrikaanse musicals en muziekspectakels van de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw. Vandaag is het de beurt aan Ipi Tombi uit 1975.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ipi Tombi (oorspronkelijk Ipi N’tombi, wat “Waar zijn de meisjes?” betekent) is een van de meest succesvolle, maar ook meest controversi\u00eble Zuid-Afrikaanse musicals aller tijden. De show werd in de jaren zeventig gecre\u00eberd door de blanke schrijvers Bertha Egnos en Gail Lakier. Het vertelt het verhaal van een jonge zwarte man die zijn rurale dorp verlaat om werk te zoeken in de mijnen van Johannesburg, een reis die symbool staat voor de urbanisatie van de zwarte bevolking onder het apartheidsregime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De musical werd een wereldwijd fenomeen dankzij de explosieve energie, de krachtige Zulu-zang en de atletische dansvormen. Nummers zoals “The Warrior” werden internationale hits. Echter, de show kreeg ook felle kritiek. Tijdens de internationale tournees, waaronder op West End en Broadway, braken er protesten uit. Activisten beschuldigden de productie ervan een “gezuiverd” en na\u00efef beeld te schetsen van het leven van zwarte Zuid-Afrikanen, terwijl de realiteit van de apartheid buiten het theater gewelddadig en onderdrukkend was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
