Wat begon als een staking bij de olieraffinaderij van Shell, escaleerde in een historische volksopstand tegen diepe sociale en raciale ongelijkheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoewel de olie-industrie welvaart bracht, profiteerde de Afro-Cura\u00e7aose bevolking daar nauwelijks van. Witte, Nederlandse contractanten kregen betere banen en hogere lonen. Onder leiding van vakbondsleiders zoals Wilson &#8216;Papa&#8217; Godett eisten de arbeiders gelijke rechten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toen de onderhandelingen vastliepen, trok een woedende menigte van duizenden demonstranten vanuit de wijk Suffisant naar de historische binnenstad, Willemstad. Onderweg braken er hevige rellen uit. Godett werd neergeschoten door de politie, wat de vlam in de pan deed slaan. Grote delen van de iconische Punda en Otrobanda werden in brand gestoken en winkels werden geplunderd. De Nederlandse mariniers moesten eraan te pas komen om de orde te herstellen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De impact was gigantisch: de regering trad af en de opstand dwong een radicale omslag af. Trinta di Mei markeerde het einde van de koloniale, witte dominantie in het bestuur. Het opende de deuren voor emancipatie, vakbondsrechten en de erkenning van de Afro-Cura\u00e7aose identiteit en de eigen taal, het Papiaments.
