Ze maakten deel uit van het Freedom Summer-project, een campagne om zwarte Amerikanen te registreren voor de verkiezingen en het diepgewortelde racisme in het Amerikaanse Zuiden te doorbreken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Op <strong>21 juni 1964<\/strong> onderzochten de mannen de brandstichting van een zwarte kerk die als &#8216;vrijheidsschool&#8217; diende. Op de terugweg werden ze door de lokale politie gearresteerd wegens een vermeende snelheidsovertreding. De lokale sheriff, die nauwe banden had met de Ku Klux Klan (KKK), hield hen urenlang vast. Nadat ze &#8217;s avonds laat werden vrijgelaten, zette een bende Klan-leden samen met politieagenten de achtervolging in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De drie activisten werden van de weg klemgereden, ontvoerd en op een afgelegen plek van dichtbij doodgeschoten. Hun lichamen werden begraven onder een aarden dam. De brute moorden en de daaropvolgende grootschalige FBI-zoektocht, bekend als Mississippi Burning, schokten de wereld.
