Tot eind jaren zestig was dit bittere ernst. Maar dat veranderde definitief op <strong>27 juni 1967 <\/strong>in het Londense Enfield. Bij Barclays Bank werd de allereerste geldautomaat ter wereld in gebruik genomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De Britse uitvinder John Shepherd-Barron kreeg het lumineuze idee toen hij telkens te laat bij de bank aankwam. Hij vroeg zich af waarom er wel automaten voor chocoladerepen bestonden, maar niet voor geld. Op de foto zie je de feestelijke onthulling van de robuuste &#8216;Barclaycash&#8217;-muurkast, waarbij de bekende Britse komiek Reg Varney de allereerste klant was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plastic pasjes bestonden nog niet. In plaats daarvan voerde men een speciale cheque in, die behandeld was met een minieme, ongevaarlijke hoeveelheid koolstof-14. De machine herkende deze chemische gelaagdheid en keerde na het intoetsen van een code maximaal tien pond uit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grappig detail: Shepherd-Barron wilde eigenlijk een zescijferige pincode invoeren. Zijn vrouw Caroline gaf echter aan dat ze er hooguit vier kon onthouden. Zo werd de viercijferige code wereldwijd de standaard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In de decennia daarna veroverde de geldautomaat met magneetstrip de wereld.
