De Oost-Bosnische stad was door de Verenigde Naties uitgeroepen tot een &#8216;veilig gebied&#8217;, waar tienduizenden moslimvluchtelingen bescherming zochten. De verdediging lag in handen van een lichtbewapende Nederlandse VN-bataljon, Dutchbat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Op 11 juli 1995 werd de enclave onder de voet gelopen door Bosnisch-Servische troepen onder leiding van generaal Ratko Mladic. De overmachtige Servi\u00ebrs omsingelden de VN-basis in Potocari, waar paniek uitbrak. Hoewel de VN bescherming had beloofd, bleef de benodigde luchtsteun uit. Dutchbat bleek niet in staat de vluchtelingen te beschermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In de dagen die volgden, <strong>vanaf 12 juli<\/strong>, scheidden de Servische militairen systematisch de mannen en tienerjongens van de vrouwen en kinderen. Terwijl de vrouwen werden gedeporteerd, werden ruim 8.000 moslimmannen en -jongens weggevoerd, op diverse locaties in de regio standrechtelijk ge\u00ebxecuteerd en in massagraven gedumpt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het Joegoslavi\u00ebtribunaal en het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempelden deze massamoord later officieel als genocide. Het falen van de internationale gemeenschap liet diepe sporen na, niet in de laatste plaats in Nederland, waar het leidde tot het aftreden van het kabinet-Kok in 2002.
