Nelson Mandela, geboren als Rolihlahla Mandela op 18 juli in 1918<\/strong>, groeide uit tot een wereldwijd symbool van verzet tegen onrecht. Als prominent lid van het African National Congress (ANC) streed hij onvermoeibaar tegen de apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika, een systeem van institutioneel racisme en segregatie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zijn activisme leidde in 1962 tot zijn arrestatie en een daaropvolgende veroordeling tot levenslange gevangenisstraf. Hij bracht 27 jaar door in gevangenschap, waarvan het grootste deel op Robbeneiland. Ondanks zijn opsluiting bleef hij een krachtig symbool van de strijd voor gelijkheid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zijn vrijlating in 1990 markeerde het begin van het einde van de apartheid. Mandela zette zich in voor verzoening in een diep verdeeld land, waarbij hij de dialoog met zijn voormalige onderdrukkers verkoos boven wraak. In 1994 werd hij de eerste democratisch gekozen zwarte president van Zuid-Afrika. Onder zijn leiderschap werd de “Regenboognatie” vormgegeven, gericht op het herstel van menselijke waardigheid en raciale harmonie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mandela’s nalatenschap is er een van onverzettelijke moed, vergeving en de overtuiging dat liefde en rechtvaardigheid sterker zijn dan haat. Hij overleed in 2013, maar zijn invloed op de wereldgeschiedenis blijft tot op de dag van vandaag onverminderd groot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
