Deze gedurfde actie was gericht tegen het regime van dictator Fulgencio Batista, dat destijds de politieke en economische touwtjes in handen had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoewel de aanval op de kazerne militair gezien mislukte en leidde tot de gevangenschap van Castro en vele anderen, bleek het een cruciaal kantelpunt in de Cubaanse geschiedenis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tijdens zijn proces hield Castro een beroemde verdedigingsrede, later bekend onder de titel &#8220;Geschiedenis zal mij vrijspreken&#8221;, waarin hij zijn visie uiteenzette voor een rechtvaardiger Cuba. Na zijn vrijlating in 1955 ging hij in ballingschap in Mexico, waar hij samen met onder anderen zijn broer Ra\u00fal en de Argentijnse arts Che Guevara de &#8217;26-juli-beweging&#8217; vormde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ze trainden intensief en keerden in 1956 terug naar Cuba aan boord van het schip de Granma. Vanuit de bergen van de Sierra Maestra voerden zij een jarenlange guerrillaoorlog tegen Batista, die uiteindelijk op 1 januari 1959 vluchtte.
